JJC kicked off the Spring 2020 semester in a similar way as many years before, with the Office of Student Activities Mainstreet event.
This semester’s Mainstreet had a decades theme, with the caption “Groove your way into Student Life.” OSA even created a hashtag for the event #MainstreetdecadesJJC.
It was held in the C-F concourse as usual, and took place on Jan. 29 and 30 from 10-1 p.m.
The purpose of the event is to give the college clubs and activities an opportunity to showcase what the college has to offer students.
The event is very beneficial in that it provides opportunities to meet new people, along with providing free food, games, and a chance to win a free t-shirt.
In the fall 2019 semester OSA gave free ice cream and had clubs offer various toppings. This encouraged interaction between students and clubs at tables.
OSA decided to switch things up this semester with popcorn as the free treat, and it was just as big of a hit.
Many clubs decided to roll with the decades theme, some people even choosing to dress up in 80s attire for the event. Many clubs decorated their tables with groovy themes.
For the chance to win a free t-shirt, students needed to spin a wheel and answer a question related to either the school or the theme.
There was also a poll to decide which club had the best decorations. The winning club would win a pizza party for their next meeting.
On Jan. 29, the college president, Dr. Judy Mitchell, was even at a table answering student questions and concerns.
Overall, OSA managed to host another successful Mainstreet event. The event continues to encourage student involvement and gain clubs with new members.
