JJC offers new scholarships, workshops

October is the month of financial opportunities, and JJC has many assistance programs for its students. Virtual workshops, scholarships, and FAFSA are all starting up within the first week of October.
Once your FAFSA is complete, you are eligible to apply for scholarships offered by JJC. Funded through the Joliet Junior College Foundation, $500,000 is offered annually in scholarships. The college offers different scholarships for many reasons including a variety of talents and ethnic backgrounds.
JJC scholarship applications open twice a school year; once in the fall, and once in the spring. Scholarships for this semester opened on Oct. 15, and close on Nov. 30.
JJC held one virtual scholarship workshop on Oct. 28 and has another one coming up in November for spring scholarships.
“I would suggest (students) attend a workshop because if they have any questions, I am right there to answer them,” said Kelly Baker, a scholarship specialist at JJC.
The next scholarship workshop is on Nov. 16 with two one-hour sessions starting at 1 p.m. Registration is available on the JJC website. For those who cannot attend the workshops, JJC also offers YouTube videos, FAQ guides, and other tips online. Students can access their scholarship dashboards via my.jjc or the JJC website.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a federal financial aid program that was introduced to most students in high school. It opened on Oct. 1 for students to apply.
It is important to complete this form as many other financial aid programs and scholarships (including those given out by JJC) require it. It is best to fill it out as soon as possible as funds are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those who are new to FAFSA or are struggling to fill it out, JJC also has virtual financial aid workshops where professionals are able to help students fill out their FAFSA or other financial aid forms. The virtual workshops started on Oct. 5, but the college has three more upcoming dates: Nov. 3 and 17, and Dec. 1.
More information on the upcoming workshops can be obtained by visiting the JJC website or contacting the financial aid department directly.
