Coming: summer films to wow you

Cinema has had a rough period following the ease of COVID-19 restrictions. Theatrical releases have been scarce the last two years, with streaming releases taking precedence.
This summer, however, has a line up of highly anticipated releases. From living in a perfect doll world to historical pieces with minimal CGI effects, here are a few summer releases that are the most anticipated.
Barbie – Dir. Greta Gerwig, Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling
“She’s everything. He’s just Ken.”
When the promotional rollout began for “Barbie,” it took social media by storm. The fun and colorful trailer ignited excitement throughout all age groups. With Margot Robbie as the titular doll living in her dream world and Ryan Gosling as one of the many Kens, “Barbie” is expected to deliver a lot of fun and lots of laughs. In theaters July 21.
Oppenheimer – Dir. Christopher Nolan, Starring Cillian Murphy
Last year just before the premier of Jordan Peele’s “NOPE,” audiences were treated to the teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer the movie is a biographical film that depicts the Manhattan Project and the creation of the Atomic Bomb. Nolan is known for his innovative and visually stunning filmmaking, and when it was revealed that he recreated the Trinity Test (the first nuclear weapon detonation) without CGI, it only further added excitement. If you’re looking for a double feature, it will also be in theaters July 21.
Asteroid City – Dir. Wes Anderson
“Asteroid City” will be the latest addition to Wes Anderson’s extensive filmography. The science fiction-themed spectacle includes a star-studded cast with the likes of Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and Jason Schwartzmaan. Set in a fictional 1950s desert, the synopsis reads: “The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer convention is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.” The visually stunning event will premiere in theaters on June 23.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – Dir. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, Starring Shameik Moore
The sequel to the 2018 blockbuster will finally be premiering this year. Starring Shameik Moore as Miles Morales/Spider-Man, the journey continues as he travels throughout the multiverse and encounters other variants of himself. The animated feature will be in theaters June 2.
Blue Beetle – Dir. Angel Mauel Soto, Starring Xolo Maridueña and Harvey Guillen
“Blue Beetle” is an upcoming DC movie based on the comic book character Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle, a teenager who gains superpowers after an alien blue beetle attaches to him. The trailer sparked excitement as it features DC’s first live-action Latino superhero and features a primarily Latino cast. Starring Xolo Maridueña as the titular character in his film debut, it will be in theaters August 18.
